What Is Audiology?

Audiology is a clinical profession that specializes in hearing, balance and related communicative disorders. It focuses on the evaluation and rehabilitation of impairment that result from various hearing disorders.

What Is an Audiologist?

An audiologist is a healthcare practitioner who evaluates and rehabilitates individuals with hearing loss.

Our licensed audiologists provide assessment and diagnosis of auditory impairment, proactively preventing, evaluating and offering rehabilitation services for hearing aids and cochlear implants as well as assistive listening devices.

In addition to providing hearing evaluations, the audiology department also works with a wide range of clientele in assessment of the vestibular system.

Who Needs an Audiologist?

Individuals with suspected or known hearing loss, tinnitus or dizziness, and children or young adults referred by pediatricians and/or school systems.

A diagnostic hearing evaluation can determine appropriate follow up, based on individual needs.

Assessment of Hearing Loss

An audiological assessment often will determine the cause of hearing loss. The purpose of an assessment is to determine the degree and type of hearing loss. It consists of a battery of tests with several different components, each providing specific information.

Our services are often directly linked with the ear, nose, and throat specialists as part of the diagnosis and treatment process. ENT physicians are available for examination and consultation, to determine if hearing loss can be treated medically or surgically. They also provide medical clearance for hearing aids.

Pediatric Assessment

Early detection of hearing loss in newborns allows for early intervention which is important in the development of speech recognition.

Our expert audiologist test for hearing impairment in infants and toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children. Often children are referred if a parent, caregiver or healthcare provider has concerns regarding hearing, speech, language, or developmental delay based on observation or standardized developmental screening. Our audiologists work in conjunction with the ENT specialists for diagnosis and treatment.
